Delhi to Kinnaur Kailash Distance

Delhi to Kinnaur Kailash Distance: Road Guide, Trek Facts & Travel Tips

Nobody speaks of Kinnaur Kailash like they do of other hill stations. Those who have seen it haven’t said it was “good.” They’ve said it did something to them. That something changed. You will only understand when you reach-first, one has to reach.

If coming from Delhi this would equal in excess of 580kms of driving, two full days of travel and quite a demanding hike through the Himalayas. This includes the following:

Delhi to Kinnaur Kailash Distance — Let’s Start With the Basics

The Delhi to Kinnaur Kailash distance by road is around 580 to 600 km, depending on your final stop inside Kinnaur. The trip goes to Reckong Peo, the district capital and the largest city near the trek base (approx 580 km from New Delhi center).Reckong Peo to Tangling village (starting point of trek) further is another 11km.

Driving time is realistically 16 to 18 hours on a clear day. Include landslips, road repair, mountain traffic for July-August and that number even more. No flight to Kinnaur. No train. The only way in is road and you have to earn every mile.

The Road Route from Delhi to Kinnaur Kailash

One main corridor connects Delhi to Kinnaur:

Delhi → Chandigarh → Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur Bushahr → Reckong Peo → Tangling

LegDistance
Delhi to Chandigarh~250 km
Chandigarh to Shimla~115 km
Shimla to Reckong Peo~235 km
Reckong Peo to Tangling~11 km

While leaving Shimla you will ride on the NH-5 which is also know as old Hindustan-Tibet Road. The road runs along with the Sutlej River for a long time with the road itself cut in to the rocks that are over hanging the river. Beautiful but tricky to drive. After Rampur, the lanes narrow, the turns tighten, and the road expects your full attention.

Stop Overnight — This is Not Negotiable

A straight Delhi-to-Kinnaur drive sounds manageable. In practice, people regret attempting it.

The Delhi–Chandigarh section is a standard highway. But past Shimla the character of the road changes entirely. That road, one lane at cliffs, lots of rocks and nowhere for to grab as it is very sheer cliff, can’t be taken light after 12h in the driver’s seat.

Spend the night at Shimla, or drive one more hour up to Narkanda (2700 mtrs), much less touristy and cooler with lots of apple orchards. Next day it’s a short drive to Reckong Peo from Narkanda. You get there refreshed, and the mountain can’t move.

Going by Bus: Delhi to Kinnaur Kailash on a Budget

Private taxis run this route but cost significantly more. The bus option is slower and completely worth it.

Step 1: Catch an evening Volvo bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate, Delhi to Shimla. HRTC operates these daily; they reach Shimla by early morning. Book online in advance.

Step 2: From Shimla bus stand, board an HRTC bus to Reckong Peo. This ride takes 8 to 9 hours through Narkanda and Rampur. Long, yes — but the views keep you busy.

Step 3: From Reckong Peo, shared taxis go to Tangling village, the trek base.

Two days total from Delhi. You share the bus with locals returning to villages in the mountains; stops are at dhabas on the highway for tea; you will arrive in Kinnaur with a perspective slightly different from a person who flew. Booking with HRTC can be done 60 days in advance-confirm with them about schedule change at least a week prior as it fluctuates between season.

Kinnaur Kailash Trek Distance: Tangling to the Shivling

On the left bank of the Sutlej and where the road ends, 7,050ft up is the village of Tangling.

The Kinnaur Kailash Trek Distance on the main route is 17 to 19 km one way — a full round trip of roughly 38 to 40 km on foot. The hike is marked as moderate to strenuous, which is a fair assessment. From Tangling it gets steep quickly, starting around hour 1. It’s in juniper/fir forest, and then rocky open ridge, then boulder fields without a trail. Not a morning jaunt for sure.

Main route day-by-day:

  • Day 1: Tangling to Ganesh Park (~9 km)
  • Day 2: Ganesh Park to Gufa cave shelter (~5 km)
  • Day 3: Gufa to Parvati Kund to Kinnaur Kailash Shivling and back (~12 km)
  • Day 4–5: Return to Tangling

There are 2 alternative routes too, one from the village of Ribba, another from the village of Purbani. They too, are less busy and quite strenuous. It would take most trekkers around 4 to 5 days to finish the trek.

Kinnaur Kailash Height in Feet: Altitude Reality Check

This is the part people underestimate until they’re already short of breath.

The Kinnaur Kailash Height in Feet for the main peak is 19,850 feet (6,050 metres). The sacred 79-foot natural Shivling — the heart of the entire pilgrimage — sits at around 15,256 feet (4,650 metres) on the trail.

It is Shivling and the thousands who flock here every year know this is why. A sheer pillar of rock that changes colour throughout the day – white, and pale in the morning light, turning golden at midday and dark grey by dusk.Pilgrims call it divine. But whatever you make of that; to stand before it, after days of difficult high-altitude walking, brings with it an experience, hard to describe and hard to forget.

Rest Day (min one) at Reckong Peo or Kalpa prior to commencement of the trek. You will never quite be ready for altitude above 12,000 ft – it creeps up on you quite sneakily! Drink water than you think you need, eat more than you think you need, don’t be too ambitious on Day One.

Yatra Dates, Permits, and Rules

It is the responsibility of the Himachal Pradesh government that Kinnaur Kailash Yatra be performed. In the year 2025, Yatra was performed from July 15 to August 30. Administration has full right to cancel Yatra any time in the season if there is landslide or any natural calamity due to weather.

Current rules to know before you book anything:

  • 350 trekkers per day allowed on the Yatra route
  • Age limit: 16 to 60 years — a new rule introduced in 2025
  • Medical fitness certificate from a registered doctor, dated within 15 days of departure, is compulsory
  • Inner Line Permit required for border villages — get it at the SDM office in Reckong Peo or via the HP government portal
  • Tour operators must submit trekker lists at the nearest police station before departure

Guides and porters are available at Reckong Peo and Tangling. Hiring one is the sensible call on a trek this demanding.

Kinnaur to Spiti: Worth the Extra Days

If you’ve come this far, don’t just turn straight back.

The Spiti Valley to Kaza Distance from Reckong Peo is around 200 km, taking 8 to 10 hours by road. From Nako, with its mountain high lake and ancient monastery, we then dive into the cold desert of Spiti. In one of those geography shifts that really makes you pause, we leave the orchards and green river valleys of Kinnaur behind and move into a world of barren brown mountains and immense, open skies.

The district capital of Kinnaur and Spiti. Kaza is the hub of Key Monastery, Kibber, and the fossil village, Hikkim. A combined Kinnaur & Spiti tour is generally a 12 to 15 days trip from Delhi and it is indeed one of the greatest road tours in India.

A Few Things to Know Before You Leave

Fuel up at Rampur Bushahr — it gets unreliable past thatTake plenty of cash from Shimla, because ATM machines in Reckong Peo get empty easily. October is beautiful but passes can close early with snowfall.

Distance Between Delhi to Kinnaur

The Road Is Part of It

580 km from Delhi to Kinnaur Kailash is not just a number. It’s the Sutlej below a cliff road, the air thinning as you climb, the orchards giving way to bare rock. Arriving at Tangling with stiff legs and completely clear eyes.

The trek asks something of you physically. The mountain asks something quieter — patience, attention, slowness. Those things don’t come from preparation. They arrive somewhere on the road, or somewhere above 14,000 feet, when the noise in your head finally stops.

Go prepared. Take your time. Don’t book the return flight too soon.
