Kinnaur Kailash Height in Feet

Kinnaur Kailash Height in Feet — The Number That Stops You Mid-Scroll (And What It Really Means)

Okay, honestly speaking, I really expected to find a clear answer to Kinnaur Kailash height in feet when I Googled it.

What I ended up getting was a rabbit hole – all these websites mentioning varied altitude, some stating the height of the peak, some of the Shivling, some of a pass which is called Charang La. It was incredibly confusing. So if you are sitting with the same confusion right now, this is exactly the article you needed to find.

Let us fix that confusion once and for all — and while we are at it, let me tell you everything about this mountain that the plain numbers can never capture.

Kinnaur Kailash Height in Feet — Exact Breakdown

Kinnaur Kailash doesn’t have one “height.” It really has three heights which count, and all are appropriate to a different type of traveler.

The main mountain summit sits at 6,055 metres, which is 19,865 feet above sea level. Its prominence is 550 metres (1,800 feet), and its coordinates are 31°31′14″N 78°21′49″E. This is the true geographic summit – this is the one printed on topographic maps, in mountaineering databases etc. Hardly anyone ever climbs all the way to this one. It’s quite a demanding mountaineering objective.

The sacred Shivling — Which is what 99% of pilgrims and trekkers will actually be seeing-is a completely different height. The sacred rock pillar-the point of pilgrimage-is located at an altitude of roughly 4885 m-equivalent to about 16027 ft. It is at this place that the entire spirituality of the trek converges and people talk of “doing Kinnaur Kailash.”

The Charang La pass, (this is part of the circuit trek route) 17,400 feet; this is a high altitude pass and there is a long crossing of a glacier with thin air.

So here is your clean cheat sheet:

What You Are Asking AboutFeetMetres
Mountain summit (geographical peak)19,865 ft6,055 m
Charang La Pass (circuit trek)17,400 ft5,300 m
Sacred Shivling (pilgrimage point)~16,027 ft4,885 m

Now, whenever someone asks you — you will know exactly which number to give and why.

But Why Does Everyone Confuse This Mountain?

Here is something interesting that most travel blogs skip. A common confusion is to mix up Kinnaur Kailash with Mount Kailash of Tibet. They are indeed two distinct mountains of the same name in different countries. The similarities of names, spiritual significance and lack of acute knowledge of Himalayan geography make the two merged in one’s thoughts.

These are different. Mount Kailash is the famous Mansarovar Yatra destination located in Tibet. Kinnaur Kailash – or Kinner Kailash as it is known locally, is situated here in India in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, bordering Tibet but deep inside Indian territory.

In actual fact,Kinnaur Kailash is one of the five sacred Kailash peaks collectively known as Panch Kailash. In which, the first position belongs to Mount Kailash, second to Adi Kailash, third to Shrikhand Mahadev and the fifth to Manimahesh Kailash.

Out of these 5 holy peaks, 4 are in India. Amongst them Kinnaur Kailash is generally believed to be the physically hardest.

The Shivling That Changes Colour — This Part Is Not a Legend

Even if you are not religious, this detail will make you pause.

16,000 ft high up in the Himalayan ridgeline in solitude, sits a rock-natural rock-pillar. Actually, this 79 ft-high natural rock pillar resembles a Shiva Lingam. It was not carved by man. Nobody placed it there. It simply grew out of the mountain that way.

And then there is the color of the mountain. The rock turns white before the sun comes up, becomes yellow after it does, red just before sunset, and black after it has set. The scientific reason is how light reflects off the mineral surface of the rock at different points in the day. The spiritual explanation to both Hindus and Buddhists of the area: Lord Shiva resides here, and the mountain takes on his temper.

The pond of Parvati Kund is situated nearby this peak which is also natural and is said to be created by Goddess Parvati and it is here where Mata Parvati worshiped for long. Mythology says Mata Parvati and Lord Shiva also meet here every winter.

However you view it, science or spirituality, when you stand before that shifting rock at sunrise, at 16,000 feet, with the Himalayas reaching as far as the eye can see in every direction… It has an effect on you that can’t be had looking at a flat screen.

How to Actually Get There From Delhi or Chandigarh

This is a journey, not a hop. Believe that before you start and you will savor every kilometer of it.

Distance from Delhi is this:-342 km from Delhi to Shimla 223 from Shimla to Kalpa 9.7 from Kalpa to the village Powari (Yatra start)

Nearest railway station is Kalka railway station at 309km from Kalpa. Nearest airport is Shimla airport at 243km from base of the trek.

Almost all travelers come by night bus or by their car up to Shimla then take road towards Reckong Peo (capital of district Kinnaur). Road is part of Hindustan-Tibet highway along the river Sutlej. The drive in itself deserves a travel article. Hanging valleys, apple orchards, wooden old temples, vertical faces hundreds of meters dropping down to river. You are entering a different world long before the trek begins.

Once at Powari, trekkers cross the Sutlej River and reach Tangling village on National Highway 5, about seven kilometres from the district headquarters — this marks the real beginning of the ascent.

Permits — Do Not Skip This Section

Kinnaur is a border district. That means the paperwork is real and enforced.

To access some areas of Kinnaur it is necessary for both Indian and foreign nationals to possess an ILP. This can be obtained from the DC’s office at Reckong Peo for Indians usually on the day required. Take several passport photographs along with your government photo identity.

How Difficult Is This Trek, Really?

To tell the truth among the 5 sacred circuits of kailash in India, Kinnaur Kailash is definitely the toughest one.

The whole trek is around 40km, takes about 4-5 days and involve steep ascents and descents, rough terrain and a persistent high altitude, even the whole summit trip to Shivling and back is a journey which takes about 10-13 hours.

Complete beginners should not try to do this directly as they will not have trekking experience. At least two easier multi-day Himalayan treks at lower altitude are recommended before taking this on.

That said — it is doable.Thousands of normal Indians-including many elderly-take this Yatra every year. This Yatra is not done by the fit-elite. It is done by the prepared people who have good shoes, good guide and faith of an unimaginable magnitude. If you love the mountain and prepare for it sincerely, it shall let you pass.

Where Hinduism and Buddhism Share the Same Rock

Perhaps one of the most sublime and attractive features of Kinnaur Kailash is the fact that it is revered equally by both Hindus and Buddhists residing in Kinnaur.

The culture in Kinnaur is a mix of Tibetan Buddhism, and in Kinnaur the experience of the harmonious blend of Hindu and Buddhist culture, one among the very few experiences in the world, is truly remarkable. All over the valley are small Hindu mandirs alongside the pagodas and monasteries.

This is not a tourist display. It is the actual cultural DNA of Kinnaur — a place where two great traditions meet naturally, shaped by geography, trade routes, and centuries of living side by side on the roof of the world.

The Simple Answer and the Real Answer

Kinnaur Kailash height in feet is 19,865 feet at the summit peak — but most pilgrims are aiming for the Shivling at around 16,027 feet, and the circuit trek crosses Charang La at 17,400 feet.

The number you need depends on why you are going. And honestly, once you are standing there, in the cold, thin air, watching a 79-foot rock shift from white to yellow as the sun clears the ridge — you will stop caring about the exact altitude and start caring about something much harder to put into words.

That is the real answer to your search.

Visiting Kinnaur Kailash in 2026? Please check with Kinnaur District Administration for Yatra dates and permit availability from itself, since it’s weather dependent and subject to change by the notification.
